Weekend activities in the West.

If you’re looking for fun and interesting things to do on the weekends, Carolina has you covered. Victoria is well known for its quality wines, and Carolina boasts three excellent wineries less than 15 minutes away. Both Russo Estate at Diggers Rest and Witchmount at nearby Rockbank draw on their owners’ Italian heritage to craft superb wines that are brilliantly paired with equally superb dishes in their on-site restaurants. Just around the corner from Witchmount, the more casual Taphouse at Round Rock combines excellent reds, whites and other drinks with a relaxed menu of pizzas, burgers, sharing boards and more.
Russo Estate For a more visually cultural adventure, check out the area’s art scene starting with regular exhibitions from local and visiting artists. Presented by the Melton City Council, these exhibitions are held throughout the region, including the CS Gallery opposite Central Shopping Centre at Caroline Springs, and the Melton Civic Centre on High Street in Melton.
For a day outdoors and to enjoy a leisurely stroll with a purpose, head to the fairways at Mt Derrimut Golf & Community Club, or Keilor Public Golf Course. Both are only about 15 minutes from Carolina and welcome members of the public to enjoy a round of golf or practice your longer shots on the driving range. You can even introduce youngsters (or yourself) to the game at Mt Derrimut’s wonderfully fun 18-hole mini-golf course, with three different levels of difficulty. Both golf courses offer equipment and clubs for hire, as well as a kiosk at Keilor and a fully licenced restaurant at Mt Derrimut.
An equally picturesque walk – but without the little white ball – can be enjoyed at the tranquil Melton Botanical Gardens. This youngish garden, complete with arboretum and peaceful lake, is being created by a band of dedicated volunteers. There’s a strong focus on native and drought-resistant
plants and shrubs from across Australia and from similar climates further afield, including South Africa, South America, California and the Mediterranean. The gardens will surely provide inspiration to anyone looking to establish their own attractive, water-wise garden at Carolina.
Last, but not least, Melbourne CBD’s location – just over half an hour away by car, or by train from Caroline Springs Station – makes a trip into the heart
of Melbourne both quick and easy. Australia’s undisputed sport, dining and culture capital, a day in Melbourne offers something for everyone, whether you’re boutique shopping, catching a show, heading to the big game or just simply exploring the city’s famed laneways, with their quirky cafes, surprising shops and fascinating history.
With so much to do just minutes from Carolina, every weekend offers up a different adventure – while always remembering, there’s still no place like home.
